The focus of the course is to get all participants playing golf on the golf course as quickly as possible. Get Golf Ready camps run Monday- Friday from 11:00 am- 1:00 pm all summer long.

(The week of July 4th the course runs Tuesday 7/5- Saturday 7/9)

Junior Golf Summer Camps 2011

The summer camps are filling up fast.  Availability in the camps for kids ages 6-11 years old in the 8:00am- 10:00am time frame is limited so sign up soon to assure a spot.  Not so many kids have signed up in the 12-17 age groups so I may adjust those camps to accommodate the overflow of younger golfers.  When signing your children up for the camps, please leave your contact information with telephone numbers, email addresses, age of participants, and whether or not your junior golfer has clubs or will need to borrow equipment for the week.

I recommend your children and grandchildren are dressed appropriately for the weather, have sunblock and a cap, and come with a water bottle and a snack.  All campers will be walking a lot, maybe more than they are used to so make sure they are prepared. Please call David with any questions at 760-989-7531.

Summer Golf Season is Heating Up!

Hello, folks.  Memorial Day 2011 is history.  School is out for the summer in a few short weeks.  The golf season is cruising along into June and there is a lot going on.  This Saturday from 10:00 am- 3:00 pm Golfology will be promoting a huge Demo Day at the Hyannis Golf Course driving range.  Come by for some expert advice and club fitting and test swinging.  All of the major manufacturers will be there for you.  Titleist, Callaway, Taylor Made, Ping, Mizuno, Cleveland, Nike, and other companies will be representing.

I am pleased to announce the beginning of two pilot programs for the summer.  In collaboration with the YMCA, I will be offering a Tuesday evening course for juniors, and a Thursday evening course for women.  These classes run 4:00pm -6:00 pm from the week of June 28th, 30th through August 9th and 11th. Sign ups for these two courses will be handled by the YMCA..

Hyannis Golf Course has been officially recognized by the PGA of America as a Get Golf Ready facility.  The Get Golf Ready Courses for the 2011 summer season are intensive 10 hour group training programs designed to get golfers playing on golf courses quickly and safely.  These stimulating courses will run Monday- Friday during the summer from 1:30pm- 3:30pm all summer long. Participants will play golf on the course and learn the seven shots- putt, chip, pitch, bunker, iron, long fairway, and drive! Rules, ettiquette, and pace of play will also be covered. Get Golf Ready is a great way to learn the game or get back to it. Price- $199.00

I am assembling a collection of amateur golf swing images from around Hyannis Golf Course and Olde Barnstable Fairgrounds. All golfers have given their permission to have their swings out there for public viewing pleasure. Feel free to comment.  Maybe we will all learn something.  These  golf swings can be found under the heading ‘Swings’.

Last week I had the pleasure of teaching golf with fellow PGA professionals to over twenty young people from the Perkins School for the Blind. The event was held at the MGA Links facility in Norton. These enthusiastic kids had a great time feeling the swing and hearing the ball go in the hole.  We instructors had as much fun as our students.

The junior summer camps for 6-11 year olds that run from 8:00- 10:00 am are filling up quickly!  If you know of someone who attended last years camps and would like to do so again this year, please sign them up soon.  More information including the schedule can be found under the juniors page.

See you on the course.

After Action Analysis.

81 shots.  One of thirteen fairways, six greens in regulation, 36 putts!  Those are the facts in my after action analysis, folks.  Today I played in the Cape Cod Open at Olde Barnstable Fairgrounds.  My round was not good, however, it is possible to derive something positive from the time I spent out there today.  My playing partners were enjoyable to play with.  The golf course was in fine shape and the weather was perfect for golf.  The forecasted rain never came.  My practice and preparation before the tournament was solid and I have been playing with a lot of confidence.  I did not lose my composure.

So what happened?  How did I manage such a high score?   Quite simply, I allowed myself to become distracted.  It took 25 minutes for the group in front of us to play the first hole.  We waited on every shot, the entire round, which is typical for many tournaments so it should not have been a distraction.  We waited five minutes on every hole. I am not good when the pace of play is slow.  I prefer to walk when playing golf because it makes everything better.  I took a cart today bacause I thought it was going to rain all afternoon.  Bad decision,  more distractions.  Too many mechanical swing thoughts assaulted my subcónciousness.  At the PGA Teaching Summit last Friday,  I became intrigued by the stack and tilt swing methodology.  I had been experimenting with some swing changes and been pleased with the results.  Apparently, my new swing brain was not ready for tournament play yet.

The statistics reveal the cold hard truth for the day;  The golfer (me) played poor golf.  So now I am forced to take my own advice and forget about it.  It was just one round of golf, right?

2011 Season in Full Swing

May has snuck up on us quickly.  April blew by as fast as her winds. Both Hyannis Golf Course and Olde Barnstable Fairgrounds are in great shape.  The first month of the golf season is in the books.  Golf instruction at the club is picking up.  Most popular among those taking lessons has been the on course sessions.  Many beginners have started  custom programs designed to get them playing on the course as soon as possible.  The family package continues to be a big hit.  It is fantastic to see so many moms, dads, and their kids playing golf and having fun together.  Coming soon will be the late spring and summer schedule for women’s group lessons and beginning golfers.  In addition there will be a Golf Stretch, Golf Swing course designed to increase  players flexibility, coordination and balance in their swings. Please contact David with any questions you have about golf lessons and golf programs.

Cape Cod PGA Teacher of the Year 2010

Cape Cod PGA award winner David Donnellan is congratulated by Mike Ghelfi

David Donnellan is congratulated by Mike Ghelfi upon being voted the Cape Cod PGA Teacher of the Year 2010

The Cape Cod Chapter of the New England PGA recently awarded the 2010 Teacher of the Year award to David Donnellan, PGA teaching professional at Hyannis Golf Course and Olde Barnstable Fairgrounds.  David was very excited to receive the award after his successful first season on the Cape,  ‘It is very satisfying to be recognized as a top teacher by my fellow professionals. I hope my students feel the same way!’.  Donnellan offers personal golf instruction for golfers of all ages and abilities with a high level of focus on juniors, beginners, and women. ’Independent research statistics show that the sport is losing women and junior golfers and David is doing something about that with his programs.  He encourages families to play golf together and come out to the golf courses and driving ranges and have some fun together.’, says Mike Ghelfi, Director of Golf at the clubs.

Masters Weekend

David and Fred Couples

Waiting to tee off on no 17, snapped a shot with Freddy

Waiting to tee off on no 17, snapped a shot with Freddy Saturday of Masters week. Freddy just made birdie on 16. He is four shots off the lead. I hope he keeps it going. Couples has a swing that many weekend golfers could learn something from. He has rhythm and tempo that is unmatched in my opinion. It is so good you can not really tell when he hits a bad shot. Last year at the Toshiba Classic in California, I had the opportunity of caddying in the pro-am. Freddy was the pro in one of my loops. It was an incredible opportunity for me to observe and study and contemplate his swing. Yes, his swing is smooth and it looks easy but he goes after it and swings with incredible power. If you have a chance to check out the Sunday Masters action, pay close attention to the players’ swing tempos. Observe their balance and their rhythm. Observe their body types. Try to integrate some of what you see with your own swing. Happy golfing and root for Couples!
